About Spectinomycin
Spectinomycin is an aminocycloalcohol antibiotic that is closely related to aminoglycosides and is produced by the bacterium Streptomyces spectabilis. Spectinomycin is produced by many organisms in nature, including cyanobacteria and various plant species. It exists as a spc operon in the genome or plastid of many plastids, which is usually 2-10 amino acids long (this is known to vary). The difference in size may be due to the elimination of outdated genes or nuclear genes that take over their function. Spectinomycin is mainly produced by organisms as the main predator of the defense mechanism.
