The main directions of ruscogenine, both domestically and topical, are on the treatment of rectal diseases, such as anal fissures, internal and external hemorrhoids proctitis. Well known, is in fact the vessel-protective activity, anti-inflammatory and antiedemigena of ruscogenine, such as:
induce constriction of venules without affecting appreciably the arterioles and this effect is mediated, at least in part on the ability of ruscogenine to activate alpha-adrenergic receptors, hence the vasoconstrictor which increases the venous and lymphatic;
inhibit the permeability of the venous bed as a result of local inflammation;
possess anti-elastase activity (enzymes that attack the endothelium of blood vessels and the extracellular matrix, weakening the structure);
besides ruscogenina and neuruscogenina, another saponin isolated from extracts of butcher’s broom, the aculeoside A showed inhibitory activity sull’adenilato cyclase with anti-vasodilatory.
